News - Former china clay pit is voted the UK 's best loved modern building

The Eden Project in Cornwall has been voted the UK's best loved modern building, according to a survey of 2039 adults in the UK between 18-19 November 2005, conducted by YouGov for Construction Skills (the skills council for the construction industry).

Out of a shortlist of 20 buildings consructed within the last 10 years, the former china clay pit won with 21% of votes ahead other favourite 30 St Mary Axe (the gherkin), London, which came second with 14%, and the McLaren Technology Centre, Woking, Surrey, which came third.

The success of the Eden Project reflects just one of the innovative ways of restoring former quarry workings.
