At the end of it's 5 year 'Hard Target' safety initiative, the UK quarry industry is celebrating a reduction in reportable injuries by 52% from a baseline of 655 to 317 in the reporting year 2004/05. This is also accompanied by a 36% reduction in major injuries and a 55% decrease in over-three-day injuries for the same reporting period.
The UK industry has worked hard to exceed the 'Hard Target' of a 50% reduction of reportable injuries in 5 years, and Helen Turner of the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE’s) Manufacturing Sector has called on industry to recommit to a further 50% reduction in reportable incidents by 2010, titled 'Target Zero - a world class industry' for the next stage.
This positive news comes at a time of world wide concerns over the industries safety record, with the recent tragic events in West Virginia and China.
