Applications to mining courses for this academic year have increased by more than 100% on last year. Both Camborne School of Mines and the mining department of the University of Leeds say they have received a record number of applicants.
A global shortage in mining engineers and the fantastic prospects the career can offer is thought to be the reason behind this increased interest. Indeed, upon graduating each graduate can expect to receive up to 7 job offers from the UK and around the world and can look to earning £25,000 as a starting salary.
It is also thought that onset of increased tuition fees at universities has made students think more hard about the degree they choose to study, now opting for degrees that offer high employment prospects and salaries at the end of the course.
