Virtual Mines

Conventional surveying methods have been very much put in the shade by a piece of cutting-edge equipment.

The making, recording and calculation of surveying measurements are essential for the planning and control of mining and quarrying operations.

The cloud scanner is a laser scanner which gathers spatial data at a rate of up to 1800 points per second, which allows the user to rapidly construct accurate 3D computer models of just about anything.

This cutting-edge equipment has the advantage of increased safety. Laser scanning technology allows unstable areas to be scanned at much greater distances than conventional surveying methods will allow, removing personnel from areas of danger. The cloud scanner can also be used in complete darkness, making it ideal for scanning underground.

Ongoing research at Camborne School of Mines (UEC) has also used the equipment in experiments designed to help reduce blast vibration in mining and quarrying operations that are close to residential areas, and to help record and predict coastal erosion of vulnerable sea cliffs.
