What's on offer?

Metallurgist

"Mining engineers identify and remove raw materials from the earth, and metallurgists figure out how to use it" Ron Brummett, Colorado School of Mines.

Metallurgists investigate properties of metals and develop new processes for extracting metals from their ores and producing new alloys. They also come up with new uses for metals.

Tasks may include examining metal processing techniques to make sure that quality is maintained, and to improve processing or develop new methods, investigation of whether methods being used are the most cost effective, efficient and environmentally acceptable, and the supervision of sampling from various stages of processing for laboratory analysis and testing.

It is possible to enter the profession, particularly at technician level, with an HNC or HND in a relevant subject, although most metallurgists are graduates.

Personal qualities required include good all round communication skills, practical and creative strengths, willingness to adhere to safety requirements, a logical mind with the ability to identify, analyse and solve problems, and enjoyment of technical and engineering work.
